THE Danish Arts Foundation’S JEWELLERY COLLECTION at KOLDINGHUS

On 1 April 2019 Koldinghus took over the Danish Arts Foundation’s jewellery collection, which is associated with a loan scheme where private citizens with a role to play at a public event can borrow a piece of jewellery for the occasion.

The jewellery collection consists of about 300 pieces of art jewellery purchased by the Danish Arts Foundation from the most highly acclaimed and experimental jewellery makers in Denmark since 1978. Every year, new pieces are purchased and added to the collection.

'our jewellery'

On September 29 the exhibition will be on display to museum visitors in a new permanent exhibition titled ‘Our Jewellery’. The exhibition will include some of the finest Danish art jewellery from the last five decades and offers unique insight into developments within the field of contemporary Danish art jewellery.

why is the jewellery lent out?

The purpose of the loan scheme is to bring the jewellery purchased by the Danish Arts Foundation into the public realm and to promote awareness of Danish art jewellery and Danish jewellery makers.

Generally, the artworks purchased by the Danish Arts Foundation have to be available to state, municipal or other institutions with public access. Thus, for many years, the Danish Arts Foundation has placed works of art in public institutions throughout the country on permanent loan.

In 2007, the Danish Arts Foundation came up with an idea for similarly bringing the unique pieces of jewellery purchased by the foundation into the public realm. Since jewellery is designed to be worn, it seemed an obvious idea to lend the pieces out so they could be put to use and on display at the same time.

who may borrow the jewellery?

  • Members of Parliament, regional councils or city councils, cabinet ministers and others who take part in an official event.
  • Others who have an active role at a public or official event.

  • Artists who headline at or take part in a cultural event, such as an exhibition opening, a concert, a reading, a film or theatre premiere and so forth.

WHAT EVENTS CAN THE JEWELLERY BE BORROWED FOR?

The jewellery can be borrowed for official events in Denmark, Western Europe, North America and Australia. Official events include, for example, public events, celebrations, anniversaries, annual meetings, award ceremonies, premieres and so forth.
