Silver by Yuki Ferdinandsen and Carsten From Andersen

Exhibition period: 2 December 2018 - 17 March 2019

In December 2018, Koldinghus presents a duo exhibition with almost 100 works in silver by two of Denmark’s leading and most productive and individualistic silversmiths, Yuki Ferdinandsen and Carsten From Andersen.

Yuki Ferdinandsen and Carsten From Andersen have each refined their signature technique, using the hammer to shape the surface of their objects, which exist in the borderland between functional hollowware and sculptural works of art.

Arare - Japanese hail stroke

‘I use the Japanese ”arare” technique, which means hail. It is a metalworking technique that produces tiny round bumps in regular rows on the surface of the metal. In my arare objects, the tiny hails create a wonderful interplay of light and shadow in the white silver. It is a great pleasure for me to create these unique objects. It is my hammer dance.’

  • Yuki Ferdinandsen was born in Japan and has lived in Denmark since 1988.
  • She trained in both Japan and Denmark, at Saga Junior College of Art and Tsuibu Metal Art School, both in Kyoto, and at the Institute for Precious Metals in Copenhagen, where she has taught the technique of chasing since 2005.

  • She has worked at Georg Jensen and today has her own workshop in Copenhagen.

  • In 2012 Yuki Ferdinandsen was named the silversmith of the year and was awarded the Karl Gustav Hansen Prize at Koldinghus with the following motivation: ‘It is exciting to see the intersection of Japanese and Danish crafts traditions. The way Yuki shapes the surfaces of the hollowware silver with painstakingly chased bumps in intricate patterns is something we have never seen in Denmark before. Her works add a new dimension to Danish silver.’

Dry stone - hammered stonecraft

‘I have always been fascinated with old stone fences, houses and mounds. For many years, I have used large stacks of many different stones in different shapes in my garden, a source of daily enjoyment. The shapes of stones – big, small, rough, smooth – hammered out in the surface of the silver now decorate the silver objects from my workshop.’

  • In 2005 Carsten From Andersen was named silversmith of the year and awarded the Karl Gustav Hansen Prize at Koldinghus with the following motivation: ‘Carsten From Andersen is an proponent of elegance in Danish silversmithing. Everything bears testimony to his excellence as a silversmith.'
