Thorvald Bindesbøll: Paperweight |

Paperweight Flat, reddish sandstone with silver plate, embossed with cloud ornamentation and gilt lightning No hallmarks Length: 14.5 cm. Width: 11 cm. MKH 15138. Formerly in Holger Kyster's Collection Literature: Poul Dedenroth-Schou: Thorvald Bindesbøll and the Silversmiths. 1997
Thorvald Bindesbøll used the lightning motif coming out of the clouds several times in the course of 1899, and in a variety of materials. It can thus be seen on a large silver vase produced by A. Michelsen, and in a number of examples at the Skovgaardmuseet in Viborg, and the Kunstindustrimuseet in Copenhagen, as well as on the binding of an edition of Holger Drachmann's work Troldtøj and on a ceramic dish on permanent loan at the Silkeborg Kunstmuseum. This paperweight was probably designed at the same time, but produced by Holger Kyster after the two men had begun working together in 1904.
For Bindesbøll, shape was not confined to a particular material - materials had to submit to the wishes of the designer. |
