Uffe Christoffersen
The Tiger's Glow. New works

Temporary exhibition from 13 January – 30 March 2008

“Put a Tiger in your Tank” as a slogan from the 60s had it, and that's exactly the sort of petrol the painter Uffe Christoffersen (b. 1947) tanks us up with.

For a generation tigers have poured out of his atelier, roaring and purring, playing, at rest, and mating. Always in strong colours and with a forceful execution which borrows from the traditions of Cobra painting. In the last few years, Uffe Christoffersen has also begun to retell the old fables, now with the tiger as the main character. “The Tiger Painter's” subject matter is of course not just the animal itself. Its wildness is not just the release for a strong painterly expression, the tiger itself is an image of the inspiration that must be tamed if it is to become art.

The Dance of the Tiger at Koldinghus
For the exhibition at Koldinghus, Uffe Christoffersen has painted a 5 x 2 m painting entitled “The Dance of the Tiger at Koldinghus”. This large painting, which will hang in the Castle Chapel during the exhibition period, is inspired by the legend of Christine Rosenkrands, who was danced to death by three noble suitors one evening at Koldinghus in 1558. This legend is called “The Dance at Koldinghus” and can be read next to the painting.

Ochre in the Sun
Apart from the tiger, Uffe Christoffersen has a passion for ochre, the iron-rich earth colour. It has interested him all his life and is found in large quarries near his home in the south of France. For many years he has worked with capturing the ochre's glow in the harsh sun in his pictures, even though he has to paint with other colours too. The tigers must have the glow of the experience of nature, so that we can bound like a tiger into the realm of freedom and happiness. The exhibition shows entirely new pictures by the artist, both “pure” tiger pictures and tiger fables, within general groups defined by light ochre, ochre, red ochre, natural umbra, caput mortuum, and black and white, so that each group of works reflects each colour and the experience of it in the strong southern French sun.
